happenings // sept 2011

What an incredible summer, after relocating from NYC to Portland in May to take on head engineering and studio managing duties at Supernatural Sound.  So much great music has been coming out of this place, and I’ve had the privilege of recording some amazing artists:

Tango Alpha Tango was in Studio A in August— recorded drums, bass, guitar, and keys live to 2” tape.  They’re coming back in October to finish the album.  Check out photos from the sessions here and here

Eric Earley from Blitzen Trapper was in the studio last week, producing a new album for Josh White.  A real pleasure to engineer for such experienced and talented guys.

Produced Brooklyn-based band The Toothaches, which we recorded at Headgear in Brooklyn and mixed at Supernatural.  Can’t wait to share some of their tracks.

Ari Chersky’s surf-jazz trio came up from Oakland in July to record a suite of tunes Ari wrote after taking a train from San Francisco to New York last fall.  Great players, songs, and such a damn delectable west coast flavor.

That’s what’s been going on lately, with lots of exciting projects coming up this fall.  If you’re thinking of recording soon and haven’t been to Supernatural, give me a call or email and come see this beautiful space!

New Tom Schecter album, “Disparition”

Tom Schecter

Just finished the forthcoming Tom Schecter album Disparition, which I produced, mixed, and mastered.  Completed in East Harlem, Downtown Manhattan, Long Island, and Portland, Oregon, the eclectic collection of songs spans from hard and fucking spooky rock to barren and soul-baring contemplative country.  It’s an adventurous departure from Schecter’s days in the NYC rock outfit Dibble Edge.  Listen to “Dawn on the FDR Drive” for one of the more accessible introductions to Disparition.

Beast Make Bomb “Skinny Legs EP”

Just wrapped up mixing the forthcoming EP by Brooklyn rockers Beast Make Bomb. It’s a pure party of rock. Head over to their web site to listen to it: http://ping.fm/IwNYC CD release party is going down Sept 5th at Bowery Poetry Club in NYC: http://ping.fm/LVdxo -david

Nothing like a Studer A800 when it’s time to throw down the music. I want to do this everyday.

I always tell artists that when recording vocals, clothing is optional. Someone’s gotten the hang of it…

schecter in portland (bowie in space?)

few things make less sense than the thought of manhattan-raised tom schecter in portland, oregon.  but last weekend he “did a job” and came out to portland to finish his upcoming album, “disparition,” with me.

first time visit to portland-- gotta wear the "false 3-piece"

spent 2 and a half days getting more done in a more relaxed atmosphere than is typical.  had recording rooms with brick walls, joey “spesh-jo” harmon on drums, matthew heller’s neumann mics and UA LA-610 in the chain, and multiple trips to “los pinches tacos navidades” in sellwood.

mixing in july.  will post audio then!
